You got your plane tickets which is exciting! you booked your Airbnb and there is nothing you are waiting more than to get to that place you waited so long for. You also want to show everybody where you are and make them envy you a little bit right? If you did not post a photo in facebook it never really happened. Well, at least for some of us. But if no-one also did not "like" it, did it happened still? what photos will you post? what do you want others to know about you? about the place? take out your point & shoot and let's think about it!
So you got to that wonderful place, whether it's the Colosseum in Rome, The Empire State Building in NYC or an amazing white sandy beach, you will always get the instinct to shoot at that first wow moment. That is perfectly fine! shoot one, two, twenty photos (don't mind the sd card...) or as much as you feel like. Finally take some rest.
We usually take those first photos without much thinking and that is what makes them usually weaker photos or at the most, photos that will make people react with that "oh, he is in Paris, that's fun". Again, that is perfectly fine. But if you want a little more attentions to your photos, you just need to take yourself a few minutes and think, that's all.
What can you think about? The difference. What would make your photo different than any other? It does not have to be a master piece or an "aha" brilliant moment. Just different. Your background is amazing? maybe there is an interesting figure in the foreground that will add to the frame. Are there a lot of shapes around? try black and white that will reduce attention to color and emphasize the shapes. Are there some good colors around? try to move your point & shoot to a "vivid" mode to bring that to attention.
Have few more minutes to think? sure you do, you are on a beach. Lay down some more. How about different point of view? try maybe to shoot from below. Are you on the beach? how about shooting from the sand level? You at the Eiffel Tower? how about shooting from directly below towards the sky full of clouds? just try different angles, the more the better, keep thinking :)
At the end of the day it does not matter if your have a DSLR camera, a point & shoot or even an iPhone with instagram. Just try different stuff. Remember to have fun though, do not push yourself too hard or you will just get frustrated. Just get there, have your first shots, think for a few more minutes and make some more shots and try all those things.
Enjoy your vacation!
